Q: what gas tank is swappable in a 1964 4dr chevy impala?
I need a gas tank for a 1964 chevy impala 4dr. the problem is I can’t find an original. Can someone suggest a chevy tank that will work.

A: Don’t mess around with something used for a car this old. You will only have problems in the long run. Fix it right or don’t fix it at all.

Go to Year One and search for item JX8. A new fuel tank will cost you about $240. If you select Impala and search for Fuel Tank, it will also return additional items you may need like tank straps and fuel lines.

By the way, the previous person got it wrong. 1961 – 1964 Impalas used the same fuel tank. One from a 1965 or 1966 won’t fit.

Q: How Much For a Brand New Trans & Engine For A 1964 Chevy Impala?
Hello all, i was thinking about buying a 1964 Chevy Impala. But the car has no trans, and no engine. Since this might be my first car, i was wondering if someone here could help me out. I just wanted to know, how much would a brand new trans and new engine cost for this car? Thank you very much.

A: You can buy them from a salvage yard pretty cheep arround $500 but if you buy brand new your looking at a few thousand dollars at least. A new transmition is at the very least $1500 Same goes for a motor and it will still need more things to make it work like a carberator, alternator, all the brackets ect. Unless its in great shape or you plan on doing a restore job on it you might be just better of to find your self something newer and running.

Q: How to replace a lower control arm on a 1964 chevy impala?

A: stabalizer bar link has to come off then put a floor jack under the lower control arm and take the nut off the lower ball joint and use a fork tool and a hammer to release the lower ball joint out of the spindle and lower the jack slowly as the coil spring has to come out (stand back as the spring has a lot of pressure and if it hits you it could kill you) then there are 2 bolts holding the lower control arm on, take the bolts out and it’s off.

I am building a lowrider chevy impala and I want to buy a new engine for it, I heard theres a couple different types I can install in it a 327 or a 397?
but I would take any type of good engine/ or the original impala engine. Where can I buy one?

A: you are just after any basic chevy small block or big block. 283, 302,327,350,396, 402 or 409. They sale these engines everywhere. ebay, penny saver, newpaper, hot rod magazine, yellow pages, or on craigslist.

Q: How can I change the bolt pattern of my 1964 chevy impala from to a 5×127?
I want to change the bolt pattern of my Chevy Impala from 5 x 4.75 to 5×127. Can it be done and if so how do I go about doing so?

A: There are three ways, for the most part, to change the bolt pattern of any vehicle.

First Option – Replace the hub assemblies with hubs that have the correct pattern. this is not always an option due to fitment, and is the most expensive.

2nd Option – Adapter plates. These are sold for some vehicles succesfully converting from one to another. Not really the best way to go as wheel offset is changed due to the adapter but it is cheap. biggest problem is limited availability,

3rd Option – is to remove your hubs, remove the studs, and take it to a reputable machine shop to have the hubs redrilled in the correct pattern. Problems with this method are numerous. First off, there is only so much material in the hub facing, so drilling extra holes can greatly weaken the hub, Secondly, again, hubs are only so big in diameter, and the hub may not have enough surface area to successfully drill 5 more holes. This is much more labor intensive, and machine shops charge high rates.

My 10 cents would be to try to find hubs with the correct bolt pattern to fit your vehicle. that or call up your local machine shops and ask them if they have a supplier that can send you a blank hub.

Q: What cars have interchangeable parts with a 1964 Chevy Impala?
Visiting the wreck yards to find parts so I can convert from drum to disk bakes and adding power steering to my chevy.

A: bel air , caprice, pontiac bonneville, most GMs use the same parts, however you will have a hard time finding disc brake setup for a 64 in any model corvette and covair are the only two that pop into mind.if you do decide to change over to a disc setup from later year remember you not only need hub/disc/caliper assembly you need master cylinder and booster/proportioning valve as well.

Q: How do you remove the front bumper on a 1964 Chevy Impala?
I’m helping my dad restore a ‘64 Impala. He’s no stranger to working on classic cars, and he’s taken a lot of bolts off, but still can’t seem to see what’s still holding it on.

A: Maybe welding was added, the botls couldve been there to act as a shock absorber

Q: How much is a 1964 Chevy Impala SS Convertable? Some rust on frame and steering is unstable. ?
Maroon with black top in good condition. Some body putty. Black interior. Located in Missouri.

A: pretty well name thier prices, its how bad you want it . Parts are comming back You can get just about any part you want , to rebuild it.. thier isnt that many ss 64 conv around., they didnt make that many. I dont think you could buy one for what I bought mine over 40 years ago for 350 dollors and yes still keep it up

Q: How to install front coil springs for 1964 Chevy Impala?
I’ve been working on my car dubbed “project 64″ for some time. Recently I had work done to my garage and in doing so, I had to take my car off the jack stands and roll it out to make room in the garage. Now that my car is on the floor, if you look at it from the front, you’ll see that it leans to the side as if it has hydraulics. I’m planning on installing new shocks, but I was guessing that my springs went bad. Does anyone out there have any knowledge on how to install front coil springs!!!

A: i own a repair shop and you need to loosen the bottom ball joint,and place a floor jack under the bottom a-frame ,and slowly lower the a-frame down this will take the tension off the spring so you can remove it,to put it back is the same thing,put the spring in place,and start jacking the floor jack back up,and then put the bottom ball joint back in place to hold it,be careful doing this its more dangerous then it sounds good luck with it.

Q: What size tires could i go up to on a 1964 chevy impala without rubing the rear inner fender?

A: Best way to tell is to measure the dimension from the center of the existing tire to the inner lip of the wheel well…then take the tire off the car and measure the dimension from the mounting flange of the wheel (where it mounts to the the brake drum) to the outer edge of the wheel and the full width of the wheel to figure out the offset spacing of the stock wheel. Knowing the offset spacing will allow you to determine how wide a tire will fit in the wheel well with the same offset or if you change the offset with different wheels, what tire will fit. Leave a half inch or so of clearance at the tire’s widest point also so the tire does not rub.

Q: how much does it cost to fully restore a 1964 Chevy Impala?
I have one but it needs a lot of fixing up. its the four door kind.

A: Unless you’ve got a lot of friends with skills I would say about $30,000 to show. You didn’t give any pictures or a very detailed description or to what level you want it restored to. So, I can only imagine it’s rough. Sorry.

Q: Why is my 1964 Chevy Impala overheating?
Chevy 327, 8 cylinder engine has always run hot. Put in new (rebuilt) Jasper engine 8/08 along with new water pump & other obvious checks & replacements. I added a custom Vintage Air a/c system a few years ago. Would this be adding to overheating issue? I added a new aluminum radiator & electric fan. Need new ideas on how to fix cooling system. Please.

A: That rebuilt engine has probably been bored to the groady max leaving you with super thin cylinder walls. That can lead to an engine running hot. An AC unit will always add heat which will exacerbate the temp problem. One thing you might check is the lower radiator hose. Make sure it has a spring in it to prevent collapse during acceleration and highway driving. The water pump pulls water from the radiator through the lower hose and if it doesn’t have an anti-collapse spring it will collapse and cause overheating during highway driving and acceleration. Also a fan shroud to keep the air flowing through the radiator core and not escaping around the edges. If you can’t find any cooling system deficiencies try a product called “Water Wetter”. Most auto parts sell it or another brand. When added to the radiator it increases the coolant’s ability to transfer heat and will go a long way towards curing over heat problems. I run it in all my old Mustangs as their cooling systems were marginal from the start.

Q: I have a 1964 Chevy Impala 4-dr hardtop. Is there any way I can turn the hardtop into a hardtop convertible?
If so, where can this be done in California?

A: Yes it can be done. It will require alot of fabricating meaning metal work, paint, etc.. I don’t know if this is a daily driver but the 64 impala is worth more as an original. But who doesn’t like to fabricate lol. Good luck.
