How hard would it be to convert a 1964 Impala hard top into a convertible? And also what are all the differences between a 1964 Impala and a 1964 Impala SS?

A: My Neighbor converted a 1964 Super Hawk Hard Top to a removable like your talking about. He showed me his photos, he loves his Studebaker’s.

Q: What type of drive shaft is compatible with a 4door 1964 impala?
I was told I would need a drive shaft for my 1964 4door impala. It has a 350 motor and trans and I was hoping to find a drive shaft compatable with it instead of geting one custom cut, or will I need to get it custom cut since i’ve put a bigger motor.

A: if you didn’t change the tranny you can use your old driveshaft.

i have a 1964 impala built in assembled in california. I want to know what prodution number did they start iwth in california so I will know what number my car was off the line

Q: what gas tank is swappable in a 1964 4dr chevy impala?
I need a gas tank for a 1964 chevy impala 4dr. the problem is I can’t find an original. Can someone suggest a chevy tank that will work.

A: Don’t mess around with something used for a car this old. You will only have problems in the long run. Fix it right or don’t fix it at all.

Go to Year One and search for item JX8. A new fuel tank will cost you about $240. If you select Impala and search for Fuel Tank, it will also return additional items you may need like tank straps and fuel lines.

By the way, the previous person got it wrong. 1961 – 1964 Impalas used the same fuel tank. One from a 1965 or 1966 won’t fit.

Q: How Much For a Brand New Trans & Engine For A 1964 Chevy Impala?
Hello all, i was thinking about buying a 1964 Chevy Impala. But the car has no trans, and no engine. Since this might be my first car, i was wondering if someone here could help me out. I just wanted to know, how much would a brand new trans and new engine cost for this car? Thank you very much.

A: You can buy them from a salvage yard pretty cheep arround $500 but if you buy brand new your looking at a few thousand dollars at least. A new transmition is at the very least $1500 Same goes for a motor and it will still need more things to make it work like a carberator, alternator, all the brackets ect. Unless its in great shape or you plan on doing a restore job on it you might be just better of to find your self something newer and running.

Q: What is so special about a 1964 Impala?
All the rappers are raving about the 64′ Impala; is it really that much better than the 65′ or 63′ impala?

A: The 64 is related to the 63 – I doubt there’s much difference between them ( my family used to own a 1964 4-door Impala 327 with 4-bbl.) The 65 is related to the ‘66, which we also had and which had BAD paint, and poor interior styling. I much preferred the older ‘64 to the ’66’s my Dad had ( he had two of the ’66’s ). I drove both, and can’t say I liked the ‘66 at all. It was just a car to drive.

The ‘64 did have it’s own problems – the trunklid-mounted tail lights had bad grounding issues, we were constantly trying to make the bulbs stay on due to poor socket contact. But it was a more stylish car, and had better interior design than the later cars, in my opinion.

If I HAD to chose a car to drive between the two, I’d prefer the ‘64. I don’t think the ‘63 was too different, other than minor design changes. So it’s all in what you like. The ‘64 is popular now, so of course the ‘rappers like it. The Low-rider crowd likes them, too. No reason you HAVE to like a popular car, or care about them. Heck, I like AMC Gremlins ( I have eight of them myself ).

Q: What would happen if a Police officer drove a 1964 Impala SS as his police car?
Wouldn’t people be unable to tell whether or not it was a cop car thus making it easier to catch people speeding?

A: Yeah, it would be easier, but, he wouldn’t be doing much driving since the insurance on the car would be too high to drive it.

Q: How do you replace a gas tank on a 1964 impala steps of unistalling and reinstalling?

A: if the filler neck comes out of your tank take it out then take the wires and hoses off the sending unit and get a floor jack with a block of wood and put it under the tank and then take the 2 straps off , lower the floor jack and your tank is out, I would recommend that you get a new sending unit for the new tank and install it per directions on the package, to reinstall just reverse all the directions I gave you.

Q: How much would it cost to put in a good engine/transmission (all new) in a 1964 Impala?
I found one for sale and I want to fix it up – not too concerned about the body – really just want to fix up the engine for now – because as long as it drives good then there should be no problem . right ?
I want reliable , muscle car transportation! =)

A: You need to consider all the things that will make the car safe and reliable to drive. Engine, transmission, cooling system, brakes, steering, suspension, fuel and electrical systems. When dealing with old cars it is best to take care of things in order of importance. Brakes are number one. If you drive it, you better be able to stop it. Steering and suspension issues are next and so on. Regarding cost, it is a real variable since you can put a number of engines into a 1964 Impala. I’m currently refurbishing a 1969 Mercury Cougar and have over $6,000 into restoring the running gear, brakes, suspension and such.

Q: How to replace a lower control arm on a 1964 chevy impala?
1964 chevy impala chassis

A: stabalizer bar link has to come off then put a floor jack under the lower control arm and take the nut off the lower ball joint and use a fork tool and a hammer to release the lower ball joint out of the spindle and lower the jack slowly as the coil spring has to come out (stand back as the spring has a lot of pressure and if it hits you it could kill you) then there are 2 bolts holding the lower control arm on, take the bolts out and it’s off.

Q: How to install pre bent brake lines on 1964 Impala single port master cylinder?

A: Jack up the car and install from the bottom from the master cyl back to the rear end . Simple now that ya think about it , ain’t it?Install from underneath the car. p.s. I need some things for my ‘64 so contact me at eldoradodave@yahoo.com

Q: 1964 impala with two tail lights on each side?
ok im about to buy what a junkyard said was a 64 impala and i looked at it and it looked like one. but my question is can a 64 impala have two tail lights each side? because i looked at alot of them and i only saw them with three tail lights on each side.

A: Maybe it’s a cheapo model like a Biscayne or Bel air, which were not as fancy as the Impala of that era.
