Q: How much would a 1978 monte carlo be worth?
i would like to know what you think a rough estimate would be for a 1978 Monte Carlo. i the cars body is in fairly good shape, no major rust or damage, just small dents and stuff that would be common for a car this old. I belive that the car has an engine and transmission in it but does not run. this car would be a great project car. the reason i ask is cause this car is in danger of being crushed and i am thinking about purchasing the car and then reselling it. if i was in the position of restoring the car i would but i already have a 79′ camaro and a 68′ camaro that i’m working on. i would just like to know how much you think i could sell the car for.

P.S. I live outside st. louis, if that has any bearing on the cars value.
Kbb.com only goes back to cars from 1987.

A: well that all depends on weather rust is an issue. If it is, Then not very much at all.If you knew someone that was looking for certain body parts, such as turn signal assemblies, hood and trunk lids, doors/panels,grille/trim,front clip(both fenders, hood, bumper, grille, headlight assemblies, and trim) There’s a lot of people out there who need these parts desperately. The reason i know this is that my oldest brother has a 78′ Monte Carlo, And he has been trying to find some of the parts i mentioned.parting it out could make some fairly decent money. As a whole, it all depends on the condition of the entire car,Frame and all. my guess is around 600-800$ As a whole. And around 700-1000$ parted out.

Q: Why does my 1978 Monte Carlo loose power when taking off from a full stop?
I have a 1978 Chevy Monte Carlo and when taking off from a dead spot my engine looses a lot of power not being able to peel out unlike my previous 78 Monte and i have already switched out the spark plugs and wires and everything one person said it might be that my carburetor might be to big for my engine is this true or what else could it be?
I have timed it as well but im going to change the fuel filter and hopefully that will help

A: I think you need a carb adjustment. Carbs are finicky, so if it’s not something you can do yourself, find someone in your town that is a bit older and has worked with them before. If you’ve done plugs and wires, you’ve done the important stuff already. Maybe throw a fuel filter on it as well. I love the old Monte’s myself, so I hope you can get it running A-1.

All the best.

Q: how to remove an 1978 monte carlo door panel?
how do you remove the top door panel off of a 78 monte carlo. I can not figure out how to remove the top door handle which is holding the top door panel to the door. PLEASE answer quickly Im kinda in a rush thanks in advance.

A: there is a c clip style retainer on the back of the handle. it requires a special tool for removal. it can be done with a couple screw drivers but you have to be very careful

Q: How would you fix a speedometer on a 1978 monte carlo that is making noise?

A: I had the same car with the same problem. I found there are several possible causes, the most likely and easiest is the speedometer drive cable needs to be cleaned and lubricated or replaced.
The next possible causes (relatively easy) is were the cable connects to the back of the speedometer needs to be cleaned and lubricated also.
It is best to remove the cable from the car to do this work. This can be very awkward. You must lay on the floor, on your back and reach up between the foot petals. The other end of the cable is connected to the transmission.
It is very important to use a graphite base grease that is not effected by temperature and DO NOT get any grease or cleaning fluid into speedometer itself.
These are very messy procedures and graphite base grease will stain anything it touches.
If you have done these things and it still makes noise, then it is likely to be the speedometer. The speedometer is very delicate and designed to be tamper resistant. The best thing to do with it is take it to a shop that specializes in speedometer repair.
Good luck!

Q: What engines / motors can I put in a 1978-1980 Monte Carlo?
I am looking to restore a 1978-1980 Monte Carlo as a project but have very limited knowledge of Chevy engine configurations. What sizes would be a good streetable ~400HP motor to start with for this project and would fit?
350? 383? LT1?

Looking to spend no more than $3000 for the entire package.
Thanks!

A: any small block chevy, including the LSx series engines will fit just fine. i would put in a good 350 crate engine, preferably with the vortec heads, as they are going to be reasonably priced.

Q: Does anyone know the size rim that is on the 1978 monte carlo in the movie “Training Day”?
So i need a rim size and maybe an exact brand/model would be great as well, thanks. also maybe the size of the low profile tire which is used as well.

A: Probably a 20. Car would look better with 18″ torque thrusts but that is a bad looking ride in that movie.

Q: in your opion, should these cars be saved from the crusher? 1978 Monte Carlo, 1979 Trans am, and a1965 Impala
i would like to know who thinks these cars are worth saving

the reason i ask is cause my uncle has a junkyard and he is going to scrap all of the cars there. I seen 3 cars there that i would hate to see go to the crusher. they are a 1979 trans am that is just the body, no engine trans or interior, but the body is in very good shape. there is a 1978 Monte carlo, it looks like it is fully intact just not running anymore. and there is a 1965 Impala sedan, i know that the 4 doors arn’t worth as much but this thing is in great shape for how old it is. there is no engine in it but the body only has a few dings and just a little surface rust. all of the crome trim is in great shape. i already have too many cars to work on but i feel that i am obligated to save these cars. i’m not trying to make an investment or anything, my only purpose is to save these from the crusher. i think i can purchase all of them for whatever they are worth as scrap. which is probably only $100 each.
these cars i’m asking about should be saved in my opinon . the way i look at it is that someone out there would really love these cars, they may not be my dream cars but they are probably somebodies. i feel that cars like these doesn’t deserve to be crushed because they are getting harder to find every year. if they were very rusted or wrecked then i would have no problem with them being crushed. but these are very restorable cars. think about 10 years ago there were probably many 69 camaros and firebirds that got crushed that now are worth a lot. i feel that these cars are worth saving and would like to ask who else thinks that this is a noble cause.

A: They would all be great restoration projects, but it would take a bunch of money. But if you say you already have too many to work on, you should probably let them go unless you can find someone that would take them. Try Hemmings Motor News. They have classifieds all over the country.

Q: how should i fix up my 1978 monte carlo?
i just got this car from my dad and i don’t know what do to. should i get it painted dark red or a candy red. Should i put some rims on it like some 22’s,23’s,24’s, or 26’s. Should i get 4 12 inch subwoofers in my trunk(kenwood 1200watts) or 3 12 inck sub(MTX 1200 watts the square ones). what kind of cd player should i get. should i get tweeters and how many.

A: I thought you were asking about fixing it up? All the things you listed are ruining it! Keep it stock, that way when you want to sell it, you can sell it to a serious collector. They will be willing to pay a lot more than the people who will want to buy it if you do what you’re saying you want to.

Q: does anybody know who is selling a 1978 monte carlo?
i tried e bay motors and ohter web sites this is my last chance!

A: Try Trading Times or Auto Shopper (The free car ad mags from the supermarket)

Q: Whats the difference between a 1978 monte carlo and a 1979 monte carlo?

A: some trim, the grille, and the front spindles and rotors( 78 has smaller bearings)

Q: My 1978 Monte Carlo’s accelerator pedal is sticking in the floored position.?
and it hasn’t been run in 9 years
what do I do to get it working again? it’s been sitting for 9 years.
what do I do to get it working again?

A: Check the accelerator cable look under the bonnet (if you’re in the US under the hood)

Q: Can i install an Edelbrock Pro-Flo on a 1978 Monte Carlo and still pass the Smog Test(California)?
their is an area on the bottom where you can make a hole and connect it to the breather, so should it pass?

A: Not sure, it’s over 31 years old so there might be an exemption however the Eddy Pro-Flo II contains the following small print;

* Not legal for sale or use on pollution controlled motor vehicles.

I would check with DMV, Good Luck!

Q: I have a 1978 monte carlo and i have to hold the pedal to the floor to start and it wont idle.?
I just added a new gas tank and changed the fuel filter and put a in line fuel filter in.
i added a new gas tank and inline filter. once its started and i press on the gas a little it will run but as soon as i let off it stalls

A: A new / rebuilt carb. Get one from NAPA they do complete rebuilds.

Q: 1978 Monte Carlo LS?
How much is a 1978 monte carlo ls with about 80 thousand miles on it, runs, no frame rust… worth?

A: Here in Texas about $400 bucks in normal condition and maybe $1000 if it is in very good condition.

But in reality cars this old with no collector value are worth what you will pay.

Q: Can money really be made restoring this car. (1978 Monte Carlo)?
Hello i am considering buying a 1978 black chevy monte carlo with 80,000 miles on it, it runs but has a little rust. It was registered 2 months ago so I know it has not been sitting around very long. I am considering buying it as a project car and put some work in it with my friend but was wondering later on if I wanted to sell it, if some people would know if there is alot of money to be made on a car like that restored. I am buying it for $900 and am told everything is still original on it. thx

A: i can find these cars around here like that all day long. but don’t let people tell you they will bring 10 to 15000 dollars because in my experience they won’t. the selling price depends on who will buy it and for what doesn’t matter if it restored or modified just recently sold a monte carlo for 2500 that needed a shifter cable and very minor paint work interior was imaculent, brand new tires, drove like a dream and it had 154,000 miles on it but you wouldn’t have known it to see it. so the price it will bring is what the market will bear. you could buy a trans am or a z28 from that era for 10 to 15000 dollars and have a sports car.
